The employee answers to the boss, the queen is revered by her ladies-in-waiting, the teacher is respected by the students... Every person is who they are because others are who they are. The same principle applies to characters on stage: each character has a label, a STATUS that tells us their social role within a context and in relation to other characters. Encounters are the most interesting part of a story, and playing with status helps to define a character, live it, and make it interesting and organic in relation to the other people on stage. In this course, we’ll try to recognize roles, practice winning and losing, play with status by positioning ourselves in different interactions, and experiment with combinations and reversals.
